The Italian phrase mani in fede means “hands clasped in faith”. The three part design takes in several potent symbols: the hands as friendship, the heart as love, and the crown as loyalty. The design dating back to Roman times, the ring was used throughout the middle ages and the Renaissance and into the present day, as a sign of everlasting commitment. It is known as a claddagh ring in Ireland, where traditionally the ring was part of a ritualistic code that signified the wearers relationship status. On the right hand, the heart pointing towards the fingertips meant the wearer was open for love, while if pointing towards the wrist the wearer was not looking. On the left hand, it meant engaged if the heart pointed outwards, and married if pointing inwards.
