The idea of a merfolk - encompassing both masculine and feminine bodies - dates back thousands of years, perhaps because of the indispensability of water to human life, and our ancestors' reverence of the Gods they believed inhabited the various elements we rely upon for survival. Oannes was one such water deity, also known by the Babylonians as Ea. He was a merman, with some parallels to the Greek God Apollo, who was believed to have instructed our ancestors in the art of agriculture and architecture. He was also considered to me the God of knowledge and art, while also, naturally, ruling over the domain of water. The Oannes Pendant is carved agate, set in 18K solid yellow gold, studded with black diamonds.
