Many stories have been told of the miraculous significance of the scallop shell. It is said that after the death of Saint James, a ghostly ship without any crew sailed with his body from Jerusalem to the Iberian coast. There he performed a final miracle as a wedding took place on shore. The horse of the groom was suddenly spooked, and ran into the water with the young man on its back. The wedding party feared that he had drowned, but moments later he was raised from the water, covered in conch shells - the symbol of St James - unharmed. The shell represents everlasting life, faith, and abundance.
