The southern Italian city of Naples has long held the alternative title urbs sanguinam or City of Blood, for the many esoteric and mystic happening that occurred with that life-giving liquid within its confines. Every year the residents hold a magnificent procession in honour of one such miracle, in which the Neapolitan Saint Gennaro, whose devotion to the Church caused him to perform miracles with blood. At his feast, the residents carry his relics, crosses, and treasures through the narrow city streets, before enjoying a communal feast.
