This necklace is carefully handcrafted from a string of teardrop shaped jade beads.
Jade is known as one of the hardest gemstones in the world, with ancient cultures such as the Olmec and Maya using files made of ground garnet to shape and mould it. It’s toughness has given rise to a saying amongst jewellers: “Hit a diamond with a hammer and it will shatter. Hit jade and it will ring out like a bell”.
It’s melodious quality has caused it to be used in the production of many kinds of musical instruments, including those played in rituals to represent the tones of Heaven. In Chinese poetry the sound of jade has been compared to the voice of one’s lover, with the gemstone being venerated as “the concentrated essence of love”.
