Before she became known as the Goddess of War, Letters, and and Wisdom, the Ancient Greek deity Athena was referred to as the Goddess of the Night. Her symbol was that of the owl, a night bird whose distinctive call meant that across hundreds of unrelated languages it was always referred to by a similar name: in India oo-loo, in Hebrew o-ah, in old German uwila. Because of how impressed she was by its great eyes, which were said to be illuminated by a magical inner light, that gave the birds their night vision, Athene ensured that the birds were protected, and they covered the ancient Acropolis. With green tsavorit garnets and a pink ruby.
