One of the very first mermaid stories comes from Assyria. It tells of a human woman who loved a fisherman very dearly. Sadly, he died in an accident, and, beset by grief, she threw herself into a lake, intending to drown. However, the waters could not conceal her beauty or her love, and instead, she took on the form of a fish in her lower body, and retained her human upper form. Carved from Iranian turquoise and set with tsavorite garnet. Pictured in 18k solid yellow gold.
