Cast in lapis-blue resin, the Columbina Ring features a flat top, and a face carved into either side.
During the 16th Century, a new artform and cultural practice sprang up in the portside city of Venice. Influenced by the eclectic mix of peoples and wares in this trade town, masquerade balls and their accompanying costumes became increasingly popular. These balls featured a number of characters from the theatrical artform of Commedia dell’Arte and the masks the nobles wore to these events reflected those traditional characters.
Once such is Columbina, the lover of Arlechinno who disguised her identity with a half mask and an enigmatic smile.
