This lapis lazuli pendant in the shape of a lion or aslan is suspended using the ancient jewellery-making technique of wire wrapping.
For Sufis the lion represents courage and strength. One who was strong in mind and spirit was described as a “golden lion in the dark forest of this world” and it was believed that wild lions would obey those who were saintly enough, even allowing themselves to be ridden as a mount. An instance of this occurrence can be found in the Velayetname of Haji Bektash, where it is recounted that Sayyid Mahmud Hayrânî rode a lion and employed a serpent as a whip during his journey to Haji Bektash.
Each pendant is hand carved, assembled and slightly unique. These are a limited edition item, which once sold out will not return.
